Dedicated to the memory of Michael Pitt B.E.M.

This site is a tribute to Michael Pitt, who passed away peacefully on 15th August 2018.  He is much loved by his family and many friends around the world.

Michael joined the RAF at the age of 15 in 1936, entering an engineering apprenticeship at RAF Halton as one of Trenchard’s brats.

He served with 12 Sq in France in 1939-40, servicing one of the Fairey Battles which attacked the bridges over the Albert Canal on May 12 with such loss of life, and eventually departing from Brest on one of the lsst ships to leave France a fortnight after Dunkirk.

He later served in the Air Ministry, and married Margery.

After the war he trained as a primary teacher and for many years was Deputy Head of Caen School in Braunton, North Devon.  He was also passionately interested in preserving the heritage and beauty of Woolacombe, and became involved in local politics at Parish and District Council levels.

After his retirement in 1980 his interests again returned to his war-time experiences, and he became a firm supporter of memorials to fallen comrades in Belgium and France, visiting commemorations and making speeches in French and Flemish until last year.
